We invited the ever surprising and always talented Midori Hirose to be our Merchant in Residence this December. Please join us as she unveils her selection Friday December 9th from 6-8pm. This will kick off our Ho Ho Ho spirit, as we've transformed Nationale into a magic little land for the holiday season.

From our MIR "director", Ty Ennis: "The idea being Merchants in Residence is that we invite artists to showcase and sell items, in the shop side of the gallery, which they find inspirational in their everyday lives and studio practice. It's a sort of show-and-tell meets self portrait; an introduction to the space and artists for some, and an intimate glimpse at a hero for others. It could also be seen as a "so-and-so recommends."

"I was going to release them with a new perfume but changed my mind. Scent is such a personal thing I wanted customers to have a choice. I decided to just sell the custom bottle with the option to select any 9ml bottle of OLO to go with it. Also, this is a piece of art, it's not mobile. It cannot be transported easily so the perfume comes separately, to be poured into the bottle when you get home. And home it shall stay!
Portland glass artist Andy Paiko did an amazing job with these. He's been an acquaintance for a couple of years and I've always admired his work. I've been waiting for the opportunity to commission a piece from him and I've finally gotten the chance. He was able to create what I feel like is a perfect representation of my line, taking something very traditional and pushing the boundaries. Andy has an amazing balance of technical skill and imagination. I am so thrilled to have had the chance to work with him.
When I started OLO, I purposely made the packaging minimal so the perfume stayed affordable. I wanted the focus to be the fragrance. These bottles are a bit of a splurge for me and probably for customers too. This was about making the bottle I've always wanted but would never purchase for myself. It is kind of a gift to myself for working so hard this year!"

Tonight at the Cleaners, the amazing Fuchsia Lin is presenting her final project for Fantasy, Folkore and Freshwater. She performed in front of Nationale this summer when the work was still in progress. Not to be missed...

Complete exhibition of 2011 RACC Grant Project about the element of Water from 7-10 PM.
At 8:00 PM, will be the presentation of the screening of the short film, The River Flows to the Melody of the Dragon starring Mia Tagano, followed by costume performance with Nikima Jagadujev.
The exhibition will include four water dragon sculptural costumes in an installation, plus photographs of the costumes in performance-including filmmaker, Orland Nutt, as a Water Dragon!

First Friday tonight honoring late-night dance

Like last year, we will not be showing new art this December as we make room on our walls for the holiday season BUT we are open late for First Friday (6-8pm) with a celebration of late-night dance with Robert Tyree, one night before his All-Night Dance.

This will be the book release for Intensive Dance, a small text about dance in late-night contexts, written over the course of several years by Robert Tyree and produced as a love affair of dance and design in collaboration with Julie Bach and Avalon Kalin. 30 copies printed and hand bound at the IPRC.

We will also be screening excerpts of Check Your Body at the Door, a documentary on American underground dance forms. It's wacky. It's 90's. It portrays sublime house/vogue/loft dancers in NYC.

Designer Zoe Garred's Braid line is one of discreet elegance, and we will be carrying her hand-woven bracelets and necklaces in a few select colors (with gold/silver accents, $40-60).

Garred has exhibited all over the world, including at the Designboom mart in NY, Tokyo, and London. She holds degrees in industrial design, from Emily Carr University, and in painting, from the University of Calgary. This year, she has been awarded a Vancouver Mayor’s award for emerging talent in craft and design.

STORM THARP | MERCHANTS IN RESIDENCE 002

Merchants in Residence reconciles the two aspects of Nationale, the gallery and the shop, by inviting artists to share with us books, records, and products of all kinds that mean a lot to them, both in their art practice and in their everyday life. For the second installment of Merchants in Residence, Ty Ennis invited Storm Tharp.

Storm Tharp was born in 1970. He has lived in Oregon for all of his 41 years – minus the four that were spent at Cornell University from 1988 – 1992. He is an artist. Large figurative works on paper have occupied most of his creative output for the past 6 years. The paintings of this nature have been collected by The Whitney Museum of Art, The Cleveland Museum of Art, The Albright Knox Gallery, The Saatchi Gallery, The Herbert F. Johnson Gallery at Cornell University and The Portland Art Museum. He has exhibited his work in select galleries and Museums at home and abroad. He is represented by Jane Beebe at PDX Contemporary Art in Portland, Oregon.

Heather Christle is the author of The Trees The Trees (Octopus Books, 2011) and The Difficult Farm (Octopus Books, 2009). Her third book, What Is Amazing, will be published by Wesleyan University Press in 2012. A native of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, Christle lives in Western Massachusetts.

Zachary Schomburg is the author of The Man Suit (Black Ocean, 2007), Scary, No Scary (Black Ocean, 2009), and two forthcoming books, Fjords and The Book of Joshua. Schomburg co-does Octopus Books and Octopus Magazine. He lives in Portland, Or.

This poetry reading is part of Zachary Schomburg and Heather Christle's tour of reading new poems and holding a mobile tag sale. Available objects may include small appliances, windbreakers, cassette tapes, and costume jewelry. Each will be sold with a unique collaborative poem by the poets. No early birds.

Whether swathed in pastels or detailed in minute shades of gray, the disparate landscapes of Mother My Son evoke the familiar desire to cement one’s presence within life’s most fleeting moments. Within such everyday scenes as a chain link fence or a receding horizon, photographers Jake Arcularius and John Voves record their paths in a style that, counter to film’s proposed objectivity, ultimately renders the mundane thoroughly unfamiliar. Through such aesthetic means as decisive compositions, contrasting resolutions and an ever-vigilant eye, their images, like a distant dream, forgo straightforward reproduction in favor of more pictorial visions. Indeed, Arcularius’ and Voves’ landscapes operate simultaneously as both records and elusive narratives of the artists’ travels that subtly posit truth as an unreliable hallmark of memory. Danielle Ross is a Portland-based choreographer. She received her BFA in Dance and Performance Studies from University of California, Berkeley, where she was also the recipient of the Sara Huntsman Sturgess Memorial Prize for Outstanding Artistic Accomplishment in Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies. Since moving back to Portland, Ross has created her own dance and performance-based work. Most notably, she presented Make The Air Thick at Launch Pad Gallery in July 2010, Home/Body at Appendix Projects Space in December 2010, and curated the twelfth installment of Performance Works Northwest’s Alembic Series in March 2011. Her work has been shown at the Richard Foreman Festival. Ross is currently dancing for Linda Austin and will perform this month in Zoe/Juniper’s installation at the Time Based Art Festival. Her most recent work, To Remember Is To Jump Around There, will be presented in Portland this fall.

It's been a busy summer here at Nationale and in the press, too!

- Elina Tuhkanen's exhibition last month was reviewed by John Motley in The Oregonian.
- Nationale was mentioned in the Sunday New York Times in their recent "36 hours in Portland" article.
- The Portland Monthly also featured the 811 E Burnside building recently.

Our membership program event this month is a dance performance by Danielle Ross. Save the date for September 24th, 7pm. Events are always free for Nationale's members. We charge a small fee at the door for non-members.

Recent trips to Los Angeles, to see the extraordinary Paul Thek exhibition at The Hammer Museum, and to Seattle, for the grand opening of Dirk Park's new gallery Prole Drift, were inspiring in so many ways and renewed our hopes and vision for the future of Nationale. As we approach our third anniversary, we've had the chance to develop close relationships with six talented artists and fantastic individuals that we now represent. We'll periodically send news about their upcoming projects. Here it is for September:

- LIZ HARRIS, our featured artist this month, will also be performing at TBA (as Grouper) on September 14th for NEW MUSICS.
- CARSON ELLIS' beautiful collaborative project with Colin Meloy, WILDWOOD, was just released this past week. We still have a few First Edition copies in the shop.
- RIKKI ROTHENBERG will be performing at TBA (as Woolly Mammoth Comes to Dinner) on September 15th for CATCH & September 17th for DANCE TRUCK.
- A photograph from DELANEY ALLEN's In Visibility exhibition (Nationale, January 2011) was chosen by Washed Out to be the cover of their new EP, Eyes Be Closed.
- JAIK FAULK now resides in San Francisco where he is attending SFAI for a Master of Arts in Painting. His next solo show at Nationale is set for July 2012.
- As for CARI VANDER YACHT, she is back in Amsterdam after her extremely popular June solo exhibition at Nationale. Rumor has it she will be showing a new painting in Sweden this fall. More details to come.

In Repeating Patterns, Liz Harris explores the cogitative and spatial qualities of linear motifs. From elemental designs that spread slowly across the white paper to those which stutter forward in calculated regiments, her meticulously hand-drawn images display an almost obsessive attention to line and pattern. However, despite such concentrated artistic effort, Harris ultimately eschews the cold precision of 60s Op art in favor of more organic textures and subtler forms. Mirroring the repetition of line as mantra, the act of drawing becomes a mode of meditation through which Harris both acknowledges her inability to make perfect lines, and questions the utility of such perfection in the first place.

Pairing many of the works in such a manner that encourages analysis, Harris additionally seeks to examine the spatial relationships connecting her unique patterns. By amplifying the resonant space between pieces, she transforms the exhibition space into a mirror hall wherein aesthetic similarities converge and open up onto a new, albeit impossible, space. Harris scatters mementos from this uncanny universe—a withered glove, a mask- like slip of skin—throughout her pieces, casting the patterns as magic receptacles for either individual solace or universal connectivity.

Portland-based artist and musician Liz Harris received her Bachelor of Art from UC Berkeley in 2002. Her work has been exhibited in numerous galleries throughout Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, New York, Tokyo, and Portland and she has also received support from such institutions as the Galeria Zé Dos Bois (Lisbon) and Issue Project Room (New York). Harris’ experimental music and field-recording project Grouper recently released the vinyl 7” Water People as part of a residency with the Ballroom Marfa Foundation (Texas). Liz Harris is proudly represented by Nationale in Portland, Oregon.

In primal photos, a hunt for the hidden meaning

In "Pilose Crux (Front)," 2009, one of Finnish artist Elina Tuhkanen's photographs on view at Nationale, we encounter a luxurious fur coat draped over a pair of adjacent chairs. Seemingly disembodied, a head of long brown hair spills onto the coat, but, otherwise, the image reveals no sign of a human presence. It's a surreal spectacle, somewhere between furniture and animal, that creates a visceral friction in the way the fur and hair blend chromatically, but clash texturally.

Stranger still is how, in the accompanying "Pilose Crux (Back)," Tuhkanen shows her cards by presenting the same subject photographed from the opposite vantage. Now we see a young woman with her legs curled beneath her on the chairs and her face buried in the coat. As the artist shows us what's behind the figurative curtain, Tuhkanen teases transparency -- it's just a girl kneeling on a pair of chairs. But, look again, and there's no real reveal. Beneath a Magritte-like shroud of hair, the model's face remains unseen.

Throughout this body of work, Tuhkanen employs this strategy: photographing models hidden behind fur coats, usually in the bleak winter terrain of her native Finland. In one, a young woman's hair topples over the mane of a horse, as she hides behind its front legs. In another, a phalanx of models crouches behind furs to approximate a herd. According to the artist, the imagery is meant to convey a primal connection to the animal world and the shelter of camouflage, but these ideas never satisfyingly congeal. That's not necessarily a weakness: The pictures are seductive precisely because they seem to spring from the subconscious, divorced from any concrete meaning. They are as sensuous and choreographed as a fashion spread, but also as puzzling and open-ended as an unfinished sentence. In that sense, they adhere to the associative non-logic of dreams, presenting disorientation as an endgame in itself.

While many humans repress their innate animal needs under the guise of social advancement, the figures in Elina Tuhkanen’s exhibition Pilose Crux: Performative Sculptures from Finland actively resurrect their primitive selves through intimate, almost sacred, acts of camouflage. Communing, prayer-like, behind heavy screens of fur, their hidden gesturing suggests a longing for symbiosis in a culture defined by its increasing disconnect from the natural world.

Compositionally, the figures’ concealed faces force the viewer to eschew a traditional reading of emotional cues for a more instinctive response to their physical posturing. Tuhkanen further perpetuates this primitive concern by revealing the rudimentary structure of the furry assemblages that, activated by the subjects’ similarly colored hair, ultimately transform into a site of divine contact between both the animal in the human, and the human in the animal.

Elina Tuhkanen is a multimedia artist who spent her youth between Atlanta, Georgia and her grandmother’s farm in Ilvesjoki, Finland. She earned her BFA in painting in 2001 from the University of Georgia at Athens and she recently obtained her MFA in sculpture from the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts. Tuhkanen’s work has been shown at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia, East/West Project in Berlin, and various galleries throughout Finland, Norway, and Estonia. Tuhkanen has curated a number of exhibitions in Finland and has an upcoming exhibition in Ameno, Italy. She currently resides in Helsinki, Finland.

For the first and only time in 2011, the month of July will bear witness to a complete lunation – a full lunar cycle between two new moons. During this transformation, the moon’s gravitational forces will cause the Earth’s larger bodies of water to rise and fall and will, perhaps, compel similar tides within our bodies. For Lunation, Glitterheart explores this latter belief and journeys through a cosmic landscape of astrological influences where geology merges with physiology, and performance and installation weave into ethereal layers of soil, skin, and rock.

Glitterheart is a collaboration between individuals with a focus on interactive, responsive, and visually oriented live art.

Jess Hirsch lives and works in Minneapolis, Minnesota where she is currently pursuing an MFA in sculpture at the University of Minnesota. Hirsch’s work has been shown at Portland’s Fontanelle Gallery and the Artistery, the University of Michigan, and Minneapolis’ Pop Saw the Need. She previously exhibited at Nationale in May 2010. This upcoming August, Hirsch will be an artist-in-residence at the Elsewhere Collaborative in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Emma Lipp lives in Brooklyn, New York. She has directed, designed, performed, and produced most recently at Portland’s Lewis and Clark College, Nationale, False Front Gallery, Emerson Space Case, Performance Works NW, and Estonia’s MoKS Center for Art and Social Practice. She currently works at Prune Restaurant in the East Village and is writing for The Diner Journal about her performance as an Estonian housewife.

Matt Marble is working towards his PhD in Music Composition at Princeton University. He lives in Brooklyn, New York.

For our first co-hosted event at the historic Hollywood Theatre, Jackie-O Motherfucker celebrate the release of their new album Earth Sound System, with support from Sir Richard Bishop (Sun City Girls) and Tara Jane O'Neil.

This performance, part of the Sound and Vision series at the Hollywood Theatre, will be a unique opportunity to see the latest unfolding of the mutating cinematic poem, The Salem Singers. The film, originally created for an exhibition at the Cue Arts Foundation in NYC by Tom Greenwood and Marion Curie, has been visually re-mixed, and will be presented with live sound by JOMF for this performance only.
